The need for cutting edge methodology for effective teaching in primary and secondary schools has been harped as a necessity to enhance coordinated teaching and learning process in the classroom. This formed the basis of a one day ‘ training the trainers’ seminar , part of the Legislative impact of Member House of Rep, representing Ilaje/Ese- Odo Federal Constituency , Hon. Victor Kolade Akinjo.
The training attracted both primary and secondary school teachers from Ilaje / Ese-Odo as the venue of the facility empowerment session, Teachers Hall, Okoga, Igbokoda was filled to brim.
While declaring the training open, the Rep of Ilaje/Ese -Odo Federal Constituency , Hon. Kolade Akinjo, who was one time Special Adviser to the President on Youth Matters thanked his constituents profusely for believing in him and their kind gesture of keeping faith with him as their eyes in the House of Reps. Akinjo said he has contributed in the lower chamber of the National Assembly by sponsoring bills that are poised to affect the people positively , noting that facilitating the seminar is about bringing teachers in his constituency up to speed on the cutting edge approach of the new teaching methods in the modern world.
“Organising this seminar is meant to inspire our people professionally and it is more like a seed which will germinate and will affect the lives of the learners positively .
” I recall that out of the little that was available , in my bid to make life comfortable for our teachers, I have provided buses for NUT both in Ilaje and Ese- Odo and I understand ASUSS is equally clamouring for theirs too. My Representative mandate is particular about investing properly in the teaching community because the teachers are the closest to our children who are our future and leaders of tomorrow,’ Hon. Akinjo noted.
The training featured two separate lecture series with the first one delivered by Dr. Mrs. Adeyemi , an academic with Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology ( OAUSTECH), Okitipupa. The theme of her lecture was ‘ The review of the current National Policy on Education.’ She highlighted the major setback of NPE which includes but not limited to inadequate manpower, technological challenge, , inadequate facilities and even policy summersault occasioned by political instability in the system . Dr. Adeyemi challenged teachers to rise above mediocrity and expose themselves to further training and opportunities in their discipline to surmount the challenges the deficiencies in the NPE may subject them to.
In the second lecture which came up immediately after the tea break, another lecturer of OAUSTECH, Dr. Adekeye in the lecture titled ‘ Role of teachers in preventing social vices,’ stressed the need for teachers to do more in the area of teaching values and virtues in the class room , adding that teachers are in- loco parentis to the students so they must continue to punish offenders and reward outstanding conduct among their pupils. He said the carrot and stick approach will make the students to sit tight and get serious , stressing that we cannot completely abrogate corporal punishment among the students lest they become unruly thereby losing focus on their primary objective of coming to school to learn and seeing the school environment as the facility where good manners are bred.
Dr. Adekeye noted with dismay that poor remuneration and unstable salary system has reduced the mentoring zeal and coaching enthusiasm among teachers . He said to correct a child with aberrant behavior , the teacher must not only teach but communicate to the innate instinct of the child with a bid to correct and instill discipline.
Teachers across Ilaje/ Ese -Odo Federal Constituency who participated in the training thanked Hon. Akinjo for the well thought out package.
