Political calculations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos are increasingly shaped by zoning debates and power-sharing considerations, as stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress weigh how best to balance representation across the state.
The renewed focus follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign by March 31, a move that has accelerated consultations and triggered fresh alignments within party ranks across Lagos.
At the centre of discussions is the possibility that the governorship ticket may be allocated to Lagos East Senatorial District, a development that has brought several prominent figures from the zone into early consideration. Political observers say names such as Akinwunmi Ambode, Adetokunbo Abiru, Tunji Alausa, and Jimi Benson are already being mentioned in ongoing conversations.
However, party insiders caution that no formal decision has been taken, noting that consultations are still underway. They say the final outcome will likely depend on broader strategic interests, including maintaining internal balance and sustaining party unity ahead of the elections.
Attention is also shifting to the deputy governorship slot, where there are growing indications that Lagos West Senatorial District may be favoured as part of a broader political arrangement. This has intensified lobbying efforts, particularly from stakeholders in the Badagry Division and other blocs within the district.
Analysts say factors such as religious balance, generational representation, and the question of indigenous inclusion are likely to play significant roles in determining the final ticket. There are also discussions around possible configurations that would distribute key positions governor, deputy governor, and Speaker across the three senatorial districts.
As consultations continue behind closed doors, observers believe the coming months will be critical in shaping the political landscape. They note that the outcome of these negotiations will not only determine candidates but also reflect how effectively the party manages competing interests in one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
