As dawn breaks on Nnamdi Kanu’s fourth year in custody, a coalition of U.S.-based military veterans has launched an unprecedented offensive against what they call “the world’s complicity in Nigeria’s slow-motion genocide.” The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) delivered a searing indictment of global powers Tuesday, accusing the United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS of enabling mass atrocities through their silence on the detained Biafran leader’s plight .

Kanu’s captivity traces back to June 2021, when Kenyan security forces allegedly abducted him during a covert night operation. Blindfolded and flown to Nigeria aboard a chartered flight, the IPOB leader’s extraordinary rendition violated multiple international treaties . This maneuver nullified his bail status from a 2015 arrest—bail granted after Nigerian security forces raided his home in 2017, an act the Abia High Court later deemed an “attempted violation of his right to life” .

Silencing Dissent, Unleashing Carnage AVID’s 38-page dossier directly links Kanu’s silencing to escalating violence:  Kanu’s warnings about “Fulani expansionism” went unheeded, with recent Benue massacres (200+ deaths in one week) confirming his predictions of state-sponsored violence .

“Kanu’s imprisonment greenlights massacres,” Dr. Sylvester Onyia stated, noting attacks consistently surge after court adjournments .

Nigeria’s government deploys “false flag” killings in the Southeast during Kanu’s hearings to legitimize IPOB’s terrorist label .

As Kanu’s health deteriorates—reportedly suffering from acute hypertension and spinal damage—AVID’s demand to the UK cuts deep: “Why does Britain condemn renditions in Hong Kong but fund Nigeria’s security apparatus that tortures its own citizen?”AVID Statement, June 17, 2025

With Kanu’s British passport confiscated and consular access restricted, London faces mounting pressure to invoke the R (Bancoult) v Foreign Secretary precedent for citizen protection .

AVID’s tactical demands include: Asset freezes against Nigerian officials defying court orders, modeled after Magnitsky Act precedents.  UN human rights drones to document real-time atrocities in Benue and Southeast Nigeria. Emergency ECOWAS court session under Article 10 of the Supplementary Protocol.
