In a drastic response to a deadly communal clash, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has removed every appointed leader from Amasiri community. This sweeping action targets local commissioners, traditional rulers, town union heads, and village chiefs.

The move follows a brutal attack on Okporojo village in Oso Edda, where assailants from Amasiri allegedly killed four people, beheaded victims, burned homes, and kidnapped others. Governor Nwifuru announced the sanctions directly from the attacked village, promising to restore peace.

He expressed dismay at the violence, calling it a tragic failure of past peace talks. The governor assured grieving residents of government support, stating, “What you need immediately is not just support, but permanent peace.”

Beyond firing officials, Nwifuru dissolved the Amasiri Development Union, withdrew the traditional ruler’s certificate, and removed all village heads. He warned the Amasiri community that violence leads nowhere, insisting his government does not take sides but only speaks the truth.

Nwifuru praised security forces for pursuing attackers through difficult terrain. He vowed to return to the damaged village within a year to see improved security and development, highlighting years of neglect in the area.

The governor’s unprecedented measure underscores the severity of the crisis. He concluded his warning by stating, “We will do more and we will show everybody why we’re government,” signaling a firm stance against further violence.
