Mounting insecurity in Sokoto East Senatorial District is now reshaping political decisions, with Senator Ibrahim Lamido announcing plans to exit the ruling All Progressives Congress amid persistent bandit attacks on communities he represents.

The lawmaker made his position known on Friday while addressing journalists in Sokoto, pointing to a worsening security situation that has left many residents displaced and fearful, with entire villages repeatedly targeted by armed groups.

Lamido said the decision to part ways with the APC followed extensive consultations with traditional rulers, political stakeholders, and constituents, many of whom, he noted, believe a change in political direction may be necessary to draw urgent attention to their plight.

According to the senator, daily life across parts of Sokoto East—covering areas such as Sabon Birni, Isa, and Rabah—has been severely disrupted, with farming activities declining sharply due to the threat of attacks, thereby affecting livelihoods and food security.

He explained that repeated appeals to relevant authorities over the deteriorating situation had not yielded the level of response expected, leaving communities to grapple with continued violence, kidnappings, and destruction of property.

The senator stressed that his decision was not driven by personal ambition but by what he described as the need to align with the concerns of his constituents, who are facing increasing humanitarian challenges as a result of the insecurity.

While urging the federal government to intensify efforts against banditry in the North-West, Lamido warned that failure to act decisively could deepen the crisis, as political shifts begin to mirror the frustrations of communities struggling to stay safe.
