The search for 78 schoolchildren and others still held in captivity in Borno State has renewed concerns over the impact of insecurity on families and communities, as the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, appeals for stronger action to secure their release.

The Borno State chapter of CAN made the appeal during a prayer session in Maiduguri on Sunday to commemorate the association’s 50th anniversary. The event, which was expected to be a celebration, took on a reflective tone amid ongoing security challenges affecting residents.
CAN Chairman in the state, John Bakeni, said the prolonged captivity of the students had brought emotional distress to affected families, with parents continuing to wait for news about the safety and return of their children.

The missing students are linked to two separate attacks in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. According to reports, 42 pupils and students were taken from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School on May 16, while another 36 students and one teacher were abducted from Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, on June 29.

Bakeni said CAN had continued to use advocacy and engagement with relevant authorities to draw attention to the situation, while urging security agencies and governments at both federal and state levels to strengthen efforts aimed at rescuing those still in captivity.

He described the situation as a painful reminder of the wider challenges facing communities in the state, where insecurity has continued to affect education, livelihoods and social activities. He added that the association would continue to support efforts for peace and the safe return of the abducted persons.

As families await further developments, calls are growing for coordinated action among government authorities, security agencies and community stakeholders to address the safety concerns affecting schools and ensure that children can continue their education without fear.
