The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged renovation of a police outpost at Abuloma Okuro Junction by suspected members of the DNKI, also known as Vikings, amid concerns over the independence and integrity of security institutions.
The command said the inquiry followed a viral video showing suspected cult members at the facility during a ceremony marking the completion of the work. The renovation reportedly involved repainting the building and repairing damaged furniture, while a banner bearing the message “Say No to Crime and Social Vices” was displayed at the entrance.
Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju ordered investigators to establish whether the reported renovation took place as alleged, identify those who financed or facilitated it and determine whether any officers breached professional standards. The command said it would also examine who authorised the work and whether the proper procedures were followed.
As part of its immediate response, the command queried and relieved the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the outpost. The action follows the public controversy surrounding the video, but the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances and any individual responsibility.
In a statement issued on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo said police facilities must remain public institutions dedicated to protecting citizens and enforcing the law. The command warned that such facilities must not become platforms for criminal groups to gain recognition or influence.
The police clarified that lawful community contributions towards improving police facilities are permitted, provided they comply with the appropriate procedures and safeguards under the Police Act 2020. It stressed that donations or other assistance cannot protect anyone from investigation or prosecution.
The command reaffirmed its position against cultism, organised crime and misconduct by police personnel, warning that anyone found culpable could face disciplinary or legal action. It also urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to security agencies as investigators work to establish what happened at the Abuloma outpost.
