Economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC) has has finally taken to court the former Nigeria National Petroleum commission boss, Andrew Yakubu over a six- count charge bordering on corruption and his failure to declare his asset.
Andrew Yakubu was in the news lately for keeping a whopping 9.7 million dollars as well as 74 thousand pounds in an uncompleted building which allegedly belonged to him.
Following a lead given to it by an alleged whistle blower, EFCC was said to have swooped on the property and seized the money, which as at now stands the risk of being forfeited to government through the government forfeiture act.
Andrew Yakubu, the alleged owner of the lump some was immediately arrested after the bewildering discovery.
However, Yakubu has claimed that the money, huge enough to take care of a state’s budget, was actually his and that they were money he hot from friends as gifts after he had left office as NNPC boss. If he is convicted, the money recovered from him will return to government treasury as proceeds of corrupt fund. As EFCC insists Yakubu should give the list of the personal friends who gifted him 9.7 million dollars and their business that made them to have the financial muscle to dash such a huge amount, Yakubu through his counsel, Raji (SAN) is claiming that there is no known law that warrants his naming those friends who dashed him the money he hid in an uncompleted building instead of a bank
