The traditional ruler of Umunnato Autonomous Community in Item, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Eze Innocent Kalu Mba, has apologised over a viral video in which he appeared to threaten voters who refused to support Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

The monarch issued the apology on Thursday, saying his choice of words in the video was capable of being misunderstood and did not represent his actual intentions. He said he regretted the concern and misunderstanding generated by the statement circulating on social media.

In the video recorded last week, Eze Mba was heard saying he would convene a meeting over the election and that anyone who failed to vote for Benjamin Kalu would face death from the land. The remark triggered concern over the use of traditional authority in political matters.

Addressing the controversy during his apology, the monarch said he did not support violence, intimidation or any action that could put human lives at risk. He stressed that his responsibilities as a traditional ruler included promoting peace, unity, reconciliation and the welfare of his community.

Eze Mba also clarified his position on the Abia State Government, saying his support for Governor Alex Otti remained unchanged. He said he continued to pray for the governor and the peace and progress of the state, insisting that the viral statement was not intended to undermine the administration.

The traditional ruler appealed to Governor Otti, the Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Bassey Uwabunkeonye, and residents of Abia State to accept his clarification. He said his apology was offered after reflecting on how his words could have been interpreted.

The episode has placed renewed attention on the responsibility of community leaders to exercise caution when speaking on politically sensitive issues. In his closing remarks, Eze Mba expressed regret to those who felt hurt by the video and reaffirmed his commitment to peace and the wellbeing of his people.
