The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) says it is concentrating its efforts on legislative elections ahead of the 2027 general election after deciding not to nominate a presidential candidate. Party officials say the decision followed a resolution by its National Executive Committee (NEC) to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term while remaining active in other electoral contests across the country.

Explaining the party’s position, APGA National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, said the NEC reached the decision after extensive consultations. According to him, the party concluded that endorsing Tinubu’s re-election was in what it described as the national interest, making it unnecessary to present its own presidential flag bearer to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Opara clarified that APGA’s absence from the presidential race should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from the 2027 elections. He said the party has already submitted the names of its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections through INEC’s nomination portal, demonstrating its continued participation in the democratic process.

The party maintained that its strategy is intended to strengthen its presence in legislative politics while supporting the incumbent president at the national level. According to APGA, contesting other elective offices will allow it to pursue its political objectives without fielding a presidential candidate.

Addressing questions over the missing presidential nomination, Opara said the decision reflected an official policy adopted by the party’s leadership rather than any administrative delay. He reiterated that the NEC’s endorsement of Tinubu’s re-election bid informed the decision not to upload a presidential candidate’s name to INEC.

The development comes as political parties continue to finalise their candidate lists ahead of the 2027 polls. While many parties are preparing to challenge for the presidency, APGA says its electoral strategy will instead focus on securing representation in the National Assembly and state legislatures.

According to the party, participation in legislative elections remains an important part of its long-term political agenda. APGA believes maintaining a strong presence in elected assemblies will enable it to contribute to governance and lawmaking while aligning with its presidential endorsement decision.

With its position now publicly clarified, APGA says it will continue preparations for the 2027 elections by supporting its legislative candidates nationwide. The party insists that although it will not feature on the presidential ballot, it remains committed to playing an active role in Nigeria’s democratic process through contests for other elective offices.
