The Nigerian community in South Africa is seeking answers following the reported deaths of two Nigerians in Johannesburg, with former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode urging authorities to investigate the incidents and ensure accountability.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Fani-Kayode expressed concern over the deaths of Bishop Michael Taiwo Fakunle and James Uchechukwu Nwankwo, who he said were killed in separate incidents in Johannesburg on September 4 and 5 respectively.

Fani-Kayode alleged that Fakunle was attacked at his residence by unknown persons after reportedly receiving threats, while he claimed Nwankwo died following an encounter with officers of the South African Police Service. The allegations have not been independently verified.

The former minister called on the South African government to conduct transparent investigations into both cases and prosecute anyone found responsible. He said the incidents had increased concerns among Nigerians living in the country over their safety and protection.

He also raised concerns over what he described as repeated attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, alleging that several Nigerians have lost their lives in recent years. Fani-Kayode called for stronger measures by authorities to prevent further violence and discrimination against foreign nationals.

The former minister further criticised reports of a September 30 deadline allegedly issued by some South African groups asking African nationals, including Nigerians, to leave the country. He urged South African authorities to enforce the law and protect Nigerians from any form of xenophobic action.

Fani-Kayode extended his condolences to the families and associates of the two Nigerians, while calling for improved relations between both countries. He stressed that the safety of Nigerians abroad remains a responsibility that requires cooperation between diplomatic missions and host governments.
