– Steve Ovirih.

Professor of Medicine and Academic of Lagos State University ( LASU), Prof. Dayo Faduyile, OON has described Dementia as a group of diseases with impairment of at least two brain functions, leading to loss of memory and poor judgement.

Prof. Faduyile, who is also The Special Adviser on Health, Ondo State noted that Dementia can affect communication, social skills, thinking abilities, while the change in personality affects daily social activities.

This indication was given in the weekly health nugget of the Office of the Special Adviser on Health, Ondo State as obtained by the polity.net

Prof. Faduyile maintained that Dementia usually starts around 65 years.

In a subsequent chat with the former National Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association ( NMA) , Prof Faduyile said among the factors responsible for Dementia are : wear and tear of brain cells, shrinking part of the brain that controls memory, excessive use or abuse of alcohol, uncontrolled hypertension and likelihood of stroke as well as incidents of head injury.

” A classical example of Dementia is Alzheimer Disease ( AD) . It must however be noted that Dementia happens over a long time and can be controlled, ” Prof. Faduyile added, while equally stressing that proper attention should be paid to the health of people within this age range by their children or those who live close to them because those who are passing through the condition most likely won’t admit to encountering the challenges of Dementia.
