Fears over the safety of rural water sources have come into sharp focus in Ondo State after residents of Aponmu-Lona community in Idanre Local Government Area intercepted a man allegedly attempting to contaminate their only drinking stream.
Community members say the suspect, identified as Philips Odefila, was caught in the act and apprehended before being handed over to operatives of the Ondo State Police Command for investigation.
The incident occurred at a time of heightened tension in the area, with the community already grappling with reported attacks on farmlands by suspected armed groups, raising concerns about broader threats to both livelihoods and public health.
Traditional ruler of the community, Chief Babalola Bolujare, told journalists on Friday that the attempted contamination could have had serious consequences, as the stream serves as the primary source of water for residents.
According to him, vigilance by locals prevented what could have escalated into a public health crisis, especially in a rural setting where access to alternative potable water is limited.
The monarch said the community had earlier alerted security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services, over the activities of individuals accused of destroying cocoa plantations, adding that the latest development has deepened fears among residents.
Police authorities have confirmed that one suspect is in custody and investigations are ongoing, while community leaders are urging security agencies to ensure thorough prosecution and increased surveillance to prevent further threats to critical local resources.
