The New Nigeria Peoples Party has firmly rejected calls for Kano State’s Deputy Governor to resign, asserting his constitutional right to remain in office. This comes after the state’s Information Commissioner, Ibrahim Waiya, publicly urged Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to step down.
The party, in a statement by its Kano spokesman Ibrahim Karaye, stated the constitution fully permits Gwarzo to continue his duties. They emphasized that the deputy governor and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf were elected on a joint ticket, a mandate that remains valid.
According to the NNPP, the commissioner’s demand followed Gwarzo’s choice not to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Yusuf and several aides recently moved to the APC, but the deputy governor stayed with the NNPP.
The party advised the state’s executive arm to avoid political interference and focus solely on its constitutional responsibilities. They stressed that Gwarzo continuing in his role is important for stable leadership in Kano State.
Furthermore, the NNPP questioned the commissioner’s input, noting he was “not part of the struggle” that led to the current government’s formation. They advised him to remain silent on the matter.
The statement concludes with the party’s full support for the deputy governor, urging all parties to respect the constitutional process and allow him to perform his official duties without further distraction.
