The Ondo State Government says restoring safety in its forest reserves is central to its plan to revive forestry operations, protect economic activities, and encourage investment across the state.

The government’s position was announced on Wednesday in Akure by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Forestry, Bidemi Obayangban, who said criminal elements operating in the forests had been given a 14-day deadline to leave the areas.

According to Obayangban, the directive is aimed at kidnappers and other suspected criminals who allegedly use forest locations as hideouts. He said the move is part of broader efforts by the administration to create a safer environment for farmers, timber operators, investors, and other lawful users of the reserves.

The forestry adviser explained that security remains a major requirement for the state’s plans to develop the sector, noting that economic activities cannot thrive where people working in the forests face threats to their safety.

He said the state government is working with security agencies and local hunters as part of efforts to address criminal activities within the forest areas. Obayangban added that the administration has developed strategies aimed at tackling kidnapping and other illegal operations linked to the reserves.

The government says the approach is focused on reclaiming forest spaces for productive use while ensuring that legitimate businesses can operate without fear. Obayangban also stated that Governor Aiyedatiwa prefers a strategic approach to security matters but remains committed to removing criminal elements from the forests.

The announcement comes as authorities continue to search for ways to balance security needs with the economic potential of forest resources. The state government says protecting the reserves will support its wider plans for sustainable forestry development and increased economic activity.

Obayangban warned that individuals who fail to comply with the directive would face action from the authorities. He maintained that securing Ondo’s forests is necessary to protect communities, attract investors, and restore confidence among people who depend on the sector for their livelihoods.
