Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has described his recent visit to former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as part of wider informal consultations among political leaders on Nigeria’s worsening economic and security situation.
Atiku disclosed the visit on Thursday via his social media handle, noting that the meeting took place at Amaechi’s Abuja residence earlier in the day.

According to him, the engagement formed part of ongoing private discussions among political actors concerned about rising inflation, unemployment and insecurity across different parts of the country.

He said both men used the opportunity to reflect on the current state of governance and the broader responsibility of public figures to contribute ideas toward national stability. The former Vice President noted that such conversations remain important as Nigerians continue to feel the impact of economic hardship and security challenges.

Atiku also stated that the meeting coincided with a brief celebration of Amaechi’s birthday, which was marked a day earlier. He said the discussion moved between serious national issues and lighter personal exchanges, including a brief reference to football, where Amaechi’s support for Arsenal was playfully acknowledged following the club’s recent success.

He further revealed that hospitality and cultural tradition were part of the visit, noting that Amaechi joked about not being able to serve a Rivers State delicacy, Fisherman Soup, during the meeting but promised it on a future visit. Atiku said the moment reflected the informal and cordial nature of the engagement.

While no formal political agreement was announced from the meeting, both figures are seen as influential voices within Nigeria’s opposition and reform-oriented political space, with continued interactions between senior politicians often viewed as part of broader consultations on the country’s economic direction and governance challenges.
