With just days to the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, the Nigeria Police Force has outlined a security framework that limits election duties to constitutionally recognised agencies, saying the move is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. The directive, announced on Wednesday by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone XI, focuses on preventing unauthorised groups from taking part in election security operations.

Under the arrangement, the police said they would work alongside other recognised security agencies to maintain law and order before, during and after the poll. According to a statement issued through the Zone XI Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedele Olanrewaju, all personnel assigned to election duties must be properly identified and wear their approved official uniforms throughout the exercise.

The police clarified that organisations such as the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch organisations, political groups and other quasi-security outfits would not participate in election security operations. Authorities said the restriction is intended to ensure that only agencies recognised under the Constitution perform security responsibilities during the election.

The command also warned that individuals or groups who attempt to carry out unauthorised security duties, intimidate voters or electoral officials, or interfere with the electoral process would face legal action. According to the police, enforcing these measures is part of broader efforts to guarantee that eligible voters can cast their ballots in a peaceful and secure environment.

Political parties, candidates and their supporters were urged to conduct their campaigns and election activities within the bounds of the law. The police appealed to all stakeholders to avoid actions capable of escalating tensions and to support efforts aimed at ensuring a credible and orderly governorship election across the state.

Residents were also encouraged to play an active role in promoting public safety by reporting suspicious movements, acts of violence, voter intimidation or any breach of the peace to the nearest police station or other authorised security agency. The command said timely information from the public would assist security agencies in responding promptly to potential threats.

Reaffirming its commitment to the election, the Nigeria Police Force said it remains focused on protecting lives and property while preserving public confidence in the electoral process. Authorities maintained that the security measures are designed to create an atmosphere where voters can exercise their constitutional rights freely, without fear or intimidation.
