The long-running political rivalry between Rivers State’s two former governors, Nyesom Wike and Chibuike Amaechi, has taken another turn, with fresh exchanges over political influence and relevance ahead of future electoral contests.

The latest development followed comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, during a civic reception organised in his honour by the Ikwerre people in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Saturday.

Addressing supporters at the event, Wike criticised his former political ally and predecessor, Amaechi, saying the former Transportation Minister had lost the political standing and influence he once enjoyed. The remarks further highlighted the continued differences between the two prominent figures from the state.

The comments came on the same day political leaders across party lines gathered in Ubima, also in Ikwerre Local Government Area, for the burial of Dame Mary Orduah Amaechi, the mother of Chibuike Amaechi.

The funeral service, held at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ubima, attracted several notable figures, including African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and other political leaders.

Also present were former Transportation Minister’s associates and other national figures, including APC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami. An ADC chieftain, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, later commended Atiku Abubakar for attending the ceremony and honouring the Amaechi family.

The latest exchange reflects the continuing political rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, whose relationship has shaped much of Rivers State’s political landscape in recent years. With national political activities gradually building towards future elections, observers say the influence of both leaders remains a subject of public debate.
