A local government chairman in Kogi State has declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew and imposed new restrictions on religious gatherings in his area. The measures are a direct response to growing security challenges and intelligence reports indicating potential threats to public safety.

The chairman announced that the curfew will be in effect from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily until further notice. During these hours, all movement within the local government area is prohibited. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the order strictly. Only individuals on essential duties with proper identification are exempt from the restriction.

In addition to the curfew, the chairman has placed new limits on all forms of religious gatherings. All-night vigils and other large-scale religious events are now suspended indefinitely. Regular worship services are permitted but are required to conclude by a specified early evening time to ensure congregants can return home before the curfew begins.

Local residents expressed understanding but also concern over the sudden restrictions. “We know security is not good, so the curfew makes sense,” said one shop owner, “but stopping our church vigils is hard. We pray for peace.” Security analysts suggest the measures likely point to specific, credible intelligence about planned attacks or kidnappings targeting soft gatherings, which have been a tactic used by criminal groups in the region.

The state police command has voiced support for the local government’s decision. A police spokesperson confirmed that additional personnel have been deployed to the area to ensure compliance and maintain order. The public is urged to cooperate fully with security forces, report any suspicious activity, and adhere to the new guidelines for their own safety.

These drastic steps highlight the persistent insecurity plaguing several Nigerian communities, where local authorities are often forced to take proactive measures to protect citizens. The effectiveness of the curfew and gathering bans in preventing violence will be closely watched, as will the duration of the restrictions on community and religious life.
