Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has urged the Federal Government to reconsider its approach to cannabis cultivation, arguing that Nigeria could explore the plant’s potential for legitimate economic activity rather than rely solely on farm destruction.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Sowore criticised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for continuing operations against cannabis farms across the country. He argued that destroying the crops represents a loss of potentially valuable agricultural output at a time when many Nigerians are facing economic hardship.
The activist proposed the legalisation and regulation of cannabis, saying a controlled framework could allow Nigeria to explore its medicinal and industrial applications. According to him, investment in research and regulation could create employment opportunities and generate government revenue.
Sowore also questioned the economic implications of destroying cannabis crops that he said were worth millions of dollars. He maintained that a policy focused on regulation, rather than destruction alone, could provide an alternative pathway for developing a legal cannabis industry.
His position comes as Nigeria continues to contend with widespread poverty and pressure to expand sources of employment and government revenue. Sowore argued that agricultural resources should be examined for their legitimate economic potential where appropriate regulation and safeguards can be established.
However, his proposal represents a policy position and does not alter the existing legal status of cannabis in Nigeria. The NDLEA remains responsible for enforcing the country’s laws against illicit drug cultivation and trafficking, while any fundamental change to the legal framework would require government and legislative action.
Sowore said the Federal Government should consider a regulated cannabis industry as part of broader efforts to create jobs, support research and develop new sources of revenue. His call therefore shifts the debate from the destruction of illicit farms to whether Nigeria should examine the economic possibilities of regulated cannabis production while maintaining controls against abuse and illegal trade.
