Concerns over the safety of civilians have come to the fore in Zamfara State, as a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Aminu Lawal, calls for a more sustained and cautious approach in ongoing military operations against banditry in the North-West.
Lawal, an aspirant for the House of Representatives in the Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, made the appeal in a statement on the heels of recent security offensives in parts of Tsafe Local Government Area, including Kunchin Kalgo. While acknowledging the military’s efforts, he stressed that protecting innocent lives must remain central to the campaign.
The APC stakeholder warned that without adequate safeguards, civilians could be exposed to harm, either through crossfire or retaliatory attacks by fleeing bandits. He urged authorities to ensure that security operations are carefully coordinated to minimise unintended casualties and displacement.
According to him, the fight against banditry must go beyond short-term victories, noting that criminal elements often regroup if pressure is not sustained. He called on President Bola Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief, to intensify efforts while maintaining a strategy that prioritises long-term stability and community safety.
Lawal also appealed directly to residents of affected communities, urging them to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence. He said such collaboration is critical to identifying threats early and preventing further attacks.
The renewed focus on civilian protection comes amid ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling bandit strongholds that have plagued Zamfara communities for years. Authorities say the offensives are part of broader efforts to restore order and enable displaced residents to return home.
While the campaign continues, observers say the balance between aggressive security action and the protection of non-combatants will remain a key test for authorities, as communities in Zamfara look to both immediate relief and lasting peace.
