As political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take shape, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has outlined a governance focused case for his presidential ambition, positioning his candidacy as a test of policy direction and leadership capacity in Nigeria.

Speaking during a television programme on Sunday, Amaechi said his decision to run is rooted in what he described as a clear understanding of the country’s challenges and the need for experienced leadership to address them. He argued that his time in public office, including as governor of Rivers State and later as minister, has equipped him with the tools required to tackle national issues.

Central to his pitch is a focus on infrastructure and security, areas he said define effective governance. According to him, projects in the rail and port sectors under his supervision demonstrate an ability to deliver large-scale initiatives, while also contributing to efforts aimed at improving safety across the country.

Amaechi also used the opportunity to question current policy outcomes under President Bola Tinubu, particularly in the areas of economic management and energy supply. He claimed that worsening economic conditions, rising costs, and persistent challenges in the power sector reflect gaps in policy execution that require urgent attention.

Beyond economic concerns, the former minister raised issues around the broader democratic environment, suggesting that the strength of opposition politics and institutional independence will play a critical role in shaping credible elections. He warned that limiting political competition could undermine governance outcomes and public confidence.

Amaechi is among several high-profile figures within the African Democratic Congress seeking to influence the 2027 race, alongside other opposition leaders. As campaigns gradually gather momentum, analysts say the emerging contest is likely to centre not just on personalities, but on competing visions for governance and how best to address Nigeria’s complex economic and security challenges.
