Efforts to ease rising political tension in Ibadan took centre stage on Tuesday as the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, called for restraint and neutrality among traditional leaders, urging the Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, to steer clear of partisan politics in the interest of stability in Oyo State.
Speaking to journalists at his palace in Sanyo, Ibadan, Oba Ajibola said the appeal was necessary to preserve unity and prevent unnecessary divisions within the city. He stressed that traditional institutions are expected to serve as symbols of cohesion and should not be drawn into political alignments that could heighten tension.
The monarch explained that blending traditional authority with active political engagement could create confusion and erode public trust, noting that leaders occupying revered stools must remain impartial to effectively serve all segments of society. According to him, neutrality is critical to maintaining peace, especially at a time when political discourse is becoming increasingly heated.
Oba Ajibola also moved to dispel widespread speculation surrounding alleged disagreements between the Olubadan and the state government. He described claims of plots involving the removal of the monarch or any attempt to unseat Governor Seyi Makinde as unfounded, adding that no such matters had been formally discussed to his knowledge.
Addressing concerns among residents, the Balogun reassured the public that there was no crisis in Ibadan and that relevant authorities were managing any emerging issues through dialogue. He emphasised that spreading unverified information could inflame tensions and urged residents to rely on credible sources.
While acknowledging ongoing development efforts in the state, he called on citizens to remain law-abiding and supportive of initiatives aimed at progress. He maintained that sustained peace, open communication, and respect for institutional roles remain key to preventing escalation and ensuring continued stability in Ibadan and the wider Oyo State.
