PASAN reopens National Assembly gates as NLC, TUC suspend strike

The gates of the National Assembly, which were previously locked in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) strike for a new minimum wage, have now been reopened.

The decision, made around 1 pm on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, follows the suspension of the strike by the NLC and TUC for one week to allow for further negotiations with the Federal Government.

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) had joined the strike on Monday by closing the gates in support of the demands for a new minimum wage.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, led the government’s delegation on Monday night to meet with the organised labour leaders for ongoing negotiations to resolve the impasse.

During the meeting, a pact was signed between the unions and the federal government, in which the government agreed to pay a higher amount than the initially offered N60,000 minimum wage.

The NLC and TUC had demanded a national minimum wage of N494,000 per month, citing the need for adequate funding in critical sectors like Education, Defence, and Healthcare.

However, the government expressed concerns that meeting this demand could strain its resources and hinder its ability to fund essential sectors of the economy.
