A tanker crash in Enugu on Saturday claimed 18 lives, while 13 people were rescued.

A statement signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), disclosed that the crash involved 17 vehicles, including a petroleum-laden tanker, a water tanker, 15 other vehicles, and a tricycle.

According to the statement, the tanker, loaded with premium motor spirit, experienced brake failure, lost control, and collided with other vehicles, igniting a fire that destroyed 11 of them.

“This is a tragic reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to road safety regulations,” the statement read.

A total of 31 people were involved in the crash.

Ten victims sustained injuries, three escaped unharmed, while 18 others were burnt beyond recognition.

The rescue operation, led by the FRSC and joined by Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, alongside other officials, ensured traffic was diverted to facilitate movement along the affected route. Evacuation of the burnt vehicles is ongoing.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commiserated with the families of the victims and advised motorists to use alternative routes.

“We urge all road users to exercise caution and prioritize safety at all times,” he stated.
