In a single violent ambush, a family was nearly erased. Gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in Anambra State, killing a mother, Ngozi Nwafor, and her two daughters, Martha and Uchenna. The only survivor, her son Ifeanyi Emmanuel, was left wounded and alone, now the last remaining member of his immediate family.

The attack in the Oba community has shattered the local peace, leaving residents in fear and mourning. Eyewitnesses described how the sound of gunshots brought people running, who could only rush the victims to a nearby hospital. There, the three women were declared dead on arrival from multiple gunshot wounds.

This tragedy strikes a direct blow to the official narrative of safety. Just recently, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police claimed his command had stopped kidnappings and murders. Thursday night’s killings now cast a dark shadow over those assurances.

As the community grapples with the loss, the wounded son, Ifeanyi, fights for his life in a hospital bed. The gunmen, their motives still unknown, have not been caught. The incident leaves behind a painful question: how safe is the state, and who will protect its people?
