The vibrant hub of Shuwaki Market is now a field of ruin. A fierce fire has torn through the commercial center in Gari, Kano State, leaving behind a landscape of charred wood and twisted metal where more than 500 shops once stood.

The disaster began on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Kano State Fire Service, the alarm sounded at 3:25 p.m. A local fire commander urgently alerted the control room, triggering a rapid response to the growing emergency.

Firefighters rushed from the nearby Danbatta station, but they faced a scene already overwhelmed by flames. Their arrival revealed a devastating sight: a massive section of the market, measuring thousands of feet across, had been completely wiped out.

In total, the blaze consumed roughly half of the entire market. Officials confirmed that 529 of the market’s approximately 1,000 temporary stalls were destroyed in the inferno. These fragile structures, home to the trade of countless local vendors, offered little resistance to the fire.

While the swift action of emergency crews prevented even greater loss, the scale of the destruction was simply too vast to contain quickly. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, leaving a community searching for answers.

Now, the true cost is being counted not just in lost goods, but in shattered livelihoods. For hundreds of traders who relied on the market, the ashes represent a devastating blow to their families’ income and survival.
