A 27-year-old man is facing serious charges after the Department of State Services (DSS) accused him of publicly urging for a coup. The security agency claims the man called for the armed forces to remove President Bola Tinubu from power.

The suspect was named as Chigozie Godwin. He was brought before a court in the Federal Capital Territory to face the charges. The DSS is Nigeria’s primary domestic intelligence agency.

Prosecutors told the court that the defendant made the statement in a public venue in the Nyanya area of Abuja. They allege his words were intended to cause chaos and instability in the country.

The charge against him is “subversive acts,” a serious offense under the country’s laws. The prosecution argued that his actions showed a intent to topple the government through illegal means.

In court, the DSS prosecutor requested the judge to deny the man bail. The prosecutor stated that the defendant is a flight risk and that his release could pose a threat to public order.

The judge, however, did not make an immediate decision on bail. The case was adjourned, and the suspect was ordered to be held in a DSS detention facility until the next hearing.
