Nigeria’s top diplomat has issued a stark warning, directly linking the country’s internal violence to turmoil in neighboring nations. The Foreign Affairs Minister stated that Nigeria cannot wall itself off from regional instability.
Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar explained that crises in nearby countries are making Nigeria’s own security problems worse. He pointed to a specific example, noting that a recent attempted coup in Benin Republic is part of this dangerous pattern.
“When our neighbors are unstable, it affects us,” the Minister said. He described the region’s security as interconnected, where trouble in one area easily crosses borders into another.
This connection often involves the movement of armed groups and weapons. Experts say fighters and illegal arms flow through porous borders, complicating Nigeria’s fight against armed criminals and insurgents within its own territory.
The Minister’s statement is a clear admission that local military operations alone are insufficient. It signals a push for greater regional cooperation to tackle shared threats that ignore national boundaries.
Nigeria now faces the dual challenge of addressing domestic threats while also helping to stabilize the wider West African region. The government’s next steps in foreign policy are being closely watched, as its citizens demand safety at home.
