Nigeria Bolsters Military with New Armor to Combat Surging Threats

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a major upgrade of the nation’s military hardware, aiming to tackle worsening insecurity. The move includes buying new specialized armored vehicles and reviving over 100 old combat vehicles for active duty.

The announcement was made Monday at an army conference in Lagos. Vice-President Kashim Shettima, representing Tinubu, stated that security is the top priority. “There is no nation that can achieve greatness without security,” he told military leaders.

The new equipment includes Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, designed to withstand roadside bombs and attacks. This is part of a push to better protect soldiers on the ground and improve their effectiveness in battle zones.

The government praised the army’s recent efforts against terrorist groups and other threats. Officials cited “improved outcomes” due to what they called the professionalism and courage of troops working with other security agencies.

Tinubu’s administration also promised continued support for soldiers’ families and improved welfare for serving personnel. The president honored troops who have died, saying their sacrifices are “permanently etched” in the nation’s memory.

Beyond new gear, the government plans to partner with other countries to boost local weapons production. The long-term goal is for Nigeria to rely more on its own defense industry.

The military leadership was reminded to stay neutral and professional. The government stressed that public trust depends on the armed forces staying out of politics while focusing on their core duty of defending the country.
