The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced he will soon make public the details of a peace agreement between himself and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. He claims the governor has failed to keep the promises made in the deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking during a visit to Tai Local Government Area in Rivers State, Wike accused Governor Fubara of going back on their agreement. The pact was meant to end a major political crisis that had rocked the state earlier this year.

He warned the people of Tai against trusting politicians who do not keep their word. Wike stated that money will not decide the next election in Rivers State, emphasizing that the people’s will is what truly matters.

The minister’s visit was framed as a “thank you” to the community for supporting him and President Tinubu during the 2023 elections. He highlighted rewards for their support, like the citing of a federal university in the area.

In response, local leaders from Tai pledged their continued loyalty to Wike and President Tinubu. They promised full support for the President’s re-election bid, crediting Wike’s direction for bringing development to their community.

The ongoing dispute traces back to a severe political conflict in Rivers State, which led President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency. The President personally intervened in June to negotiate peace between the two powerful figures.

Wike’s promise to reveal the agreement’s contents signals a potential renewal of political hostilities in the state. It sets the stage for a public battle over the terms of the truce as the next election cycle approaches.
