Discussions around a possible opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections are gaining momentum, as political actors weigh strategies that could reshape Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

Publisher of Ovation Magazine and politician, Dele Momodu, on Tuesday publicly backed the idea of a joint presidential ticket involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 candidate, Peter Obi, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He made the remarks during a television interview while assessing emerging alignments within opposition ranks.

Momodu said both men had previously worked together and could build on existing political goodwill, noting that Obi’s performance in the last election presents an opportunity to consolidate support among voters who backed him. His comments reflect ongoing conversations within opposition circles about forming a united front.

The development comes at a time when multiple opposition figures are exploring coalition options, amid concerns about fragmented votes in past elections. Analysts say such talks are driven by the need to present a more coordinated challenge in 2027.

While outlining his position, Momodu also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that the party is attempting to weaken opposition structures. He claimed there are efforts to create internal challenges for rival parties, although these claims have not been independently verified.

He further suggested that political pressure within the ruling party may be limiting open dissent, describing an atmosphere where some members are reluctant to publicly express contrary views. According to him, this dynamic is influencing how political alliances are being negotiated across party lines.

Despite the concerns raised, Momodu insisted that the ongoing political manoeuvres could ultimately strengthen the opposition, particularly the ADC, as more stakeholders engage in discussions aimed at building a broader coalition capable of contesting power in the next general elections.
