Fresh emphasis is being placed on internal rebuilding within the Peoples Democratic Party as key figures push for a results-driven approach to regain political strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, made this position clear during a visit to the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where he met with the newly inaugurated National Working Committee. He stressed that electoral victory, not rhetoric, remains the true test of any opposition’s relevance.

Wike’s remarks come at a time when multiple political groups are positioning themselves as alternatives to the ruling party. However, he cautioned that without tangible success at the polls, such claims risk weakening the broader opposition landscape rather than strengthening it.

The former Rivers State governor used the visit to reaffirm his support for the party’s leadership, describing unity and coordinated effort as essential steps in rebuilding trust among party members and the electorate. He acknowledged that the party had faced internal challenges but expressed confidence that it was moving past its recent difficulties.

Part of that recovery strategy, he noted, involves reaching out to aggrieved members and those who have left the party, with a view to fostering reconciliation and strengthening its base. He also advised the leadership to remain focused despite ongoing legal disputes, maintaining that previous court outcomes have favoured the party.

Responding, the PDP’s national leadership assured that efforts are underway to reposition the party and improve its electoral chances. Party officials say the focus going forward will be on organisation, unity, and voter confidence, as they prepare to contest future elections more effectively.
