Bauchi Governor Dumps PDP for APM, Signalling Major Opposition Shake-Up Ahead of 2027.

A fresh shift in Nigeria’s political landscape is unfolding as Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), a move analysts say could alter opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor announced his decision on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, where he appeared alongside APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle, senior officials, and political allies. The defection followed a series of consultations, with Mohammed stating that the move was carefully considered and aimed at repositioning his political base.

According to the governor, the decision was driven by concerns over the PDP’s internal cohesion and its ability to provide a stable platform moving forward. He said aligning with the APM would offer a more structured path for his supporters as preparations for the next election cycle gather pace.

The development marks a significant moment for the PDP, as Mohammed is a former chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and one of the party’s prominent figures. His exit, alongside loyalists linked to a faction within the party, is expected to deepen existing divisions and raise questions about the party’s readiness for future contests.

For the APM, the governor’s arrival signals an opportunity to expand its national relevance. Party officials formally received him during the event, presenting him with membership materials in what observers describe as a strategic boost to the party’s profile.

While expressing appreciation to the PDP for its role in his political journey, Mohammed maintained that the decision was about ensuring continuity in governance and providing direction for his supporters. Political watchers say the move underscores ongoing realignments across party lines, as key actors seek viable platforms in the build-up to 2027.
