A false social media report alleging a bandits’ invasion in Osun State has renewed concerns about the dangers of unverified online information, after police said the post triggered fear among residents and disrupted public calm. Authorities say the incident highlights how misleading digital content can quickly spread panic, especially in communities already sensitive to security-related reports.
The Osun State Police Command said a 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the publication of a video on Facebook that claimed armed bandits had entered the state. According to the command, the video was posted on Monday and circulated widely before investigators determined that the claim was not supported by facts.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary findings showed that the footage did not depict any bandit activity. Rather, the video reportedly showed members of the public restraining an individual believed to be suffering from a mental health condition. Authorities said the content was presented in a misleading manner, creating a false impression of a security threat.
The command disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday for allegedly disseminating information contrary to provisions of the Cybercrimes Act and other applicable laws. However, police said he was later released following appeals made by his elderly parents. Officials added that the suspect subsequently issued a public apology over the incident.
The development has drawn attention to the growing challenge facing security agencies as misinformation increasingly circulates through digital platforms. Police warned that false security alerts can divert resources, heighten public anxiety and undermine confidence in official information channels during genuine emergencies.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, according to the statement, urged residents to verify security-related information before sharing it online. He reiterated the command’s commitment to taking action against the spread of falsehoods capable of disturbing public peace, while encouraging citizens to rely on credible and official sources for updates on security matters in the state.
