Fresh legal proceedings in the appeal filed by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu have intensified attention on how Nigeria’s courts will address questions raised about the handling of his terrorism conviction. The development follows the filing of appeal documents at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, where both Kanu’s legal team and the Federal Government have now formally presented arguments challenging different aspects of the November 2025 judgment that sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The appeal process began a new phase on Friday after Kanu’s lawyers submitted their brief of argument seeking to overturn the decision delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Federal Government also filed a cross appeal, setting the stage for a legal contest that could test key principles relating to criminal trials, sentencing powers and judicial authority.

In a statement released after the filings, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, argued that the government’s cross-appeal raised questions about the trial court’s jurisdiction in relation to the sentence imposed on its leader. The group maintained that the issue goes beyond Kanu’s personal circumstances and touches on broader concerns about legal consistency and institutional credibility within the justice system.

Kanu, who was convicted on terrorism-related charges and is currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto prison, has consistently challenged the judgment through his lawyers. His defence team has previously argued that the conviction was based on provisions they consider inapplicable, while seeking a review of both the conviction and the sentence handed down by the trial court.

The Federal Government’s decision to file a cross-appeal means the appellate court will now examine arguments from both sides before reaching a determination. Legal observers note that the outcome could provide important clarification on questions surrounding jurisdiction, sentencing authority and the interpretation of laws applied during the trial.

As proceedings move forward in Abuja, attention is expected to remain fixed on the Court of Appeal and its eventual ruling. For both the prosecution and the defence, the next stage of the case will not only determine Kanu’s legal future but may also shape public confidence in the judicial process and the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.
