The Lagos State Government has moved to protect a major bridge after reports of vandalism raised concerns about possible risks to public safety. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said an inspection by officials of the state’s Office of Infrastructure found that the bridge’s structural integrity remained intact despite damage to some of its components.

The governor said remedial work would be carried out immediately, particularly around the affected columns, to prevent further deterioration. The intervention follows a video circulated on social media showing rods attached to the bridge being removed, prompting public concern over the safety of the structure.

Sanwo-Olu described the incident as criminal and unacceptable, warning that damage to critical infrastructure could have consequences beyond the immediate cost of repairs. He said the state government would not allow public facilities to be deliberately compromised.

According to the governor, officials who inspected the bridge confirmed that there was no immediate indication that its structural integrity had been compromised. He, however, said the planned remedial work was necessary to protect the affected sections and prevent further damage.

The incident has also renewed attention on the need to protect public infrastructure from vandalism. The governor warned that anyone identified as responsible for the damage would be prosecuted, stressing that acts capable of putting residents at risk would not be tolerated.

Sanwo-Olu appealed to residents to remain alert around government infrastructure and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. He said early reporting could help prevent damage from escalating and protect facilities used by thousands of people.

The state government has therefore made immediate protection of the affected bridge a priority while investigations into the reported vandalism continue. Authorities are expected to determine who was responsible for removing the bridge components and take appropriate legal action, as the government seeks to ensure the structure remains safe for public use.
