A factional leader of the Accord Party, Professor Chris Imumolen, has raised concerns over what he describes as threats to his safety and that of his family following his political position during the recent Osun State governorship election.

Imumolen endorsed the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, shortly before the August 15 election, which was won by the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. He has now appealed for restraint, saying political differences should not expose individuals or their families to intimidation.

In a statement, the Accord chieftain called on Governor Adeleke to use his influence to discourage supporters and associates from engaging in harassment, threats or violence against him or anyone connected to him. He said the appeal was intended to prevent tensions arising from political disagreements.

Imumolen stressed that his involvement in the Osun election was linked to his political activities and interest in the Accord Party. He maintained that expressing a political opinion or participating in an election should not result in fear or intimidation.

The politician also clarified that he had not authorised anyone to threaten or confront Adeleke or his supporters on his behalf. He said disputes among political actors should instead be addressed through dialogue, democratic institutions and the rule of law.

While raising the alarm, Imumolen stopped short of accusing any individual of responsibility for the alleged threats. He said he was making the concerns public as a precaution and called on security and law-enforcement authorities to investigate transparently if any harm came to him, his family or associates.

He appealed to political actors across Osun State to prioritise peace and restraint after the election. Imumolen said his objective was not confrontation, but the ability to pursue his political activities without fear, while calling for justice and respect for democratic freedoms.
