Abia State Governor Alex Otti has reflected on a past security incident that he says shaped his journey into public service, recalling how he escaped an alleged assassination attempt in Abuja while pursuing his political ambition.

Otti shared the experience on Thursday during a solemn assembly and covenant renewal service organised by the Abia State Government in Umuahia, where the focus was on dedicating the state to God and reflecting on its future direction.

The governor said the incident occurred in July 2015 in Maitama, Abuja, when a group of armed men allegedly arrived at a location where they believed he was present. According to Otti, he had left the area shortly before their arrival, preventing what he described as a planned attack on his life.

Recounting the event, Otti said the assailants, who he estimated to be about 12 in number, searched the premises after arriving and fired shots that affected two people. He attributed his escape to divine intervention, saying he was no longer at the location when the attackers came.

The governor used the occasion to emphasise the importance of the gathering, explaining that the solemn assembly was aimed at seeking spiritual renewal and reaffirming the state’s commitment to a new path.

Also speaking at the event, the Coordinator of the Solemn Assembly and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, said the programme was organised as part of efforts to mark what he described as a new chapter for Abia State under the current administration.

The governor’s account of the security scare comes as he continues to highlight personal experiences and challenges encountered before assuming office. The event ended with renewed calls for unity, reflection and commitment to the development of the state.
