The Federal Government has been urged to consider the growing pressure on workers’ livelihoods as discussions continue over possible adjustments to wages. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says the current N70,000 national minimum wage is no longer enough to meet the realities facing many Nigerian workers.

Keyamo made the remarks at the 2026 National Pre-Retirement Summit organised by XEM Consultants Limited, where he focused attention on the need for stronger support systems for employees approaching retirement and those still in active service.

According to the minister, rising living costs have reduced the value of workers’ earnings, making it difficult for many households to cope with daily expenses. He said the situation requires government and labour representatives to find common ground in ongoing wage discussions.

Keyamo noted that organised labour had pushed for a much higher wage figure, with unions reportedly demanding up to N500,000 during negotiations. He recalled that the country moved from a N30,000 minimum wage to N70,000 in 2024, but argued that current economic conditions have created fresh concerns over workers’ purchasing power.

Beyond wage levels, the minister also raised concerns about workplace fairness within some government institutions. He criticised situations where employees struggle to access basic allowances while, according to him, senior officials approve significant spending for international engagements.

Emphasising the importance of workers to national development, Keyamo said human resources remain central to the functioning of government and the economy. He stated that without workers, neither machines nor systems can effectively operate.
The minister’s comments add to ongoing conversations around employee welfare, public sector accountability and the need for sustainable wage policies. As government and labour continue discussions, the focus remains on balancing economic realities with the living conditions of Nigerian workers.
