he Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for a transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC. The Speaker said the findings of the inquiry should provide clarity on what happened and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Abbas described the incident as painful and avoidable, while extending condolences to the Niger State Government and the families of those who lost their lives.
The call comes after President Bola Tinubu directed that investigations be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Abbas said the process must go beyond identifying what occurred, stressing that it should also examine possible gaps in custodial procedures and make recommendations for improvement.
The Speaker said areas requiring attention include the condition of persons held in custody, operational procedures, the rights of suspects and concerns around congestion in detention facilities. According to him, addressing these issues is necessary to strengthen accountability within security institutions.
Abbas also acknowledged the response of Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago following protests linked to the incident. He commended the governor for taking steps aimed at preventing a breakdown of public order amid tensions generated by the deaths.
The Speaker further recognised the interventions of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, following the development. He said the involvement of relevant authorities would be important in ensuring that the investigation process addresses public concerns.
While mourning the victims, Abbas said the outcome of the investigations should serve as a guide for improving the treatment of people in custody and strengthening confidence in security operations. He offered prayers for the deceased and expressed sympathy to their families.
