Senate President Godswill Akpabio says he embarked on a spiritual journey to Rome, Italy, to seek divine intervention for Nigeria’s security challenges, including terrorism and banditry. Akpabio disclosed this while explaining the purpose of his recent visit, describing the pilgrimage as an effort to pray for the country and its people.

The Senate President said his prayers were not limited to political leaders or government officials, but extended to Nigeria as a whole. He explained that the visit was motivated by his belief that spiritual support remains important alongside government efforts to address the country’s security situation.

Akpabio said he visited Rome because of its significance within the Catholic faith and described it as a major centre of Christianity. According to him, the journey included prayers at a religious site associated with St. Padre Pio, where he made personal supplications for Nigeria.

The Senate President said he prayed for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the National Assembly and the Federal Executive Council. He added that the focus of the prayers was broader, seeking peace and protection for citizens across the country.

Akpabio also linked the spiritual exercise to ongoing concerns over insecurity, saying he sought divine help against terrorism, banditry and other threats affecting Nigerians. He acknowledged that while security agencies have responsibilities in protecting lives and property, many Nigerians also draw strength from their faith during difficult periods.

He explained that his decision reflected his personal religious conviction, citing the belief that human efforts require divine support. According to him, the pilgrimage was a personal expression of hope and a call for greater protection for the nation.

The Senate President’s comments come as security remains one of the major issues facing the country, with authorities continuing efforts to tackle various forms of violent crime. Akpabio said his prayers were offered in the interest of Nigeria’s stability, safety and future.
