Blasphemy against the Holy Prophet is punishable by death- SCFS

– Awotula Temidayo.

The Supreme Council for Sharia (SCFS) has reiterated that speaking ill of The Holy Prophet (PBH) is a grave offence that is punishable by death. Speaking in Kano in reaction to the plea by some human rights activists and civil liberty groups to the Kano State Government to wave the death sentence for one Sheriff Yahya Sharifai, the Secretary General of the council, Mallam Nafiu Ahmed Baba said those behind such plea are ignorant of what the law explicitly says on such matter.

Mallam Baba noted that
a 2007 judgement of the Supreme Court on page 52/57 on paragraphs G-B made it very clear that the position of Sharia is that any sane adult Muslim who insults , defames or utters words capable of bringing The Holy Prophet ( peace be upon Him) into disrepute or odium has committed a heavy offence which appropriate punishment is death sentence, ‘fatwa’. Quoting the Holy writ , the scribe of the Supreme Council Sharia said , ” anyone who believes in Allah and the last day should say what is right or keep quiet.”

Nafiu Baba urged the Kano State Government to execute the judgement on the offender so that his appropriate punishment will serve as a deterent to other would be offenders .

It will be recalled that Kano Upper Sharia Court has sentenced to death having been found guilty, a musician, Sharif Yahya Sharifai on the 10th August for for blaspheming Prophet Mohammed (PBH). According to the upper Sharia Court, Sharifai was to b stoned to death .
