Vice President Kashim Shettima has raised concerns over internal cohesion within the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections to prioritise party unity and democratic discipline as competition for tickets intensifies.
In a written advisory released recently, Shettima cautioned that while multiple interests and ambitions are expected within a political party, the process must not weaken the APC’s structure. He stressed that all contenders remain members of the same political family, warning against actions that could fracture the party before the general elections.
Addressing the issue of internal rivalry, the Vice President noted that only one candidate can emerge from any primary contest, describing this outcome as a normal feature of democracy. He explained that disappointment among aspirants should not be mistaken for injustice, but rather accepted as part of a competitive political process.
Shettima also spoke on the growing debate around endorsements within the party, acknowledging that party leaders and stakeholders may naturally express preferences. However, he warned that such influence must not translate into intimidation or exclusion, insisting that transparent processes are essential to maintaining credibility and trust among party members.
The Vice President further called on party leaders to ensure fairness in the conduct of primaries, urging that delegates be allowed to make decisions freely and that grievances be addressed promptly. According to him, how the party manages internal disagreements will determine its strength heading into the elections.
He concluded by appealing for restraint and maturity among aspirants and their supporters, emphasizing that political careers extend beyond a single contest. Shettima warned that internal conflict could undermine the APC’s chances, stressing that unity, patience, and discipline remain critical to the party’s long-term stability and electoral success.
