The 2027 presidential contest has drawn fresh attention to Atiku Abubakar’s political camp following his son, Abba Abubakar’s decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. The move has prompted a reaction from the Nigeria Democratic Congress Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, who questioned the implications for the former Vice President’s presidential ambition.

Abba, who leads the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, a political mobilisation platform, had earlier joined the All Progressives Congress. He has now announced plans to mobilise support for Tinubu across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones ahead of the 2027 election.

He also disclosed plans for a proposed two-million-man march in support of the President’s re-election campaign. The initiative is expected to form part of his organisation’s efforts to build support for Tinubu ahead of the polls.

Reacting in a post on X, Agada described the development as damaging to Atiku’s political image and suggested that the former Vice President should reconsider his ambition. His comments followed the public alignment of Atiku’s son with a campaign supporting the incumbent President.

The development comes as Atiku remains a major political figure in the opposition and a potential contender in the 2027 presidential election. He has repeatedly criticised the Tinubu administration’s policies, accusing the government of worsening economic hardship and hunger in the country.

Abba’s decision, however, represents his own publicly stated political position and does not, on its own, establish a change in Atiku’s political affiliation or presidential plans. The available information also does not indicate whether the father and son have publicly addressed the political differences.

With political mobilisation already taking shape ahead of 2027, the development adds a family dimension to the wider contest between supporters of the ruling APC and opposition figures. It also highlights the different political choices emerging within prominent political families as parties prepare for the next general election.
