– Steve Ovirih.

A group of Nigerians in The Diaspora, specifically in The United States, ‘ Better Nigeria- USA’ has extended a kind patronage and support to the victims of Owo Catholic Church massacre .

It will be recalled that on the 5th June, 2022 , specifically on the day commemorating The Pentecost, a mass shooting and heavy bombing of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State took place; a sad development in which not few than 40 people died , while several other victims were rushed to the hospitals in the ancient town. A sad occurrence of such magnitude has never once been recorded not in Owo, not in Ondo North or in any part of Ondo State .

Better Nigeria- USA moved by empathy and the need to provide succor for the victims of the Owo massacre, therefore sent in their representatives to present the 1 million Naira Cash support , which was presented on behalf of Better Nigeria by the group’s Co founder, Prof. Salewa Olafioye.

The presentation was made at St Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Lagos on Friday, 30th December, 2022.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of Catholic Bishop of Ondo, Most Revd. Jude Arogundade was Revd Father Emmanuel Umanaholen , Vicar , St Agnes Maryland, who expressed the profound appreciation of Bishop Arogundade to the group for their kind and thoughtful gesture.

He said, ” the Lord Bishop will like to thank Better Nigeria – USA for the kind gesture .

” Considering that you are based abroad, your reaching out in cash and in kind to the victims of Owo massacre is a reflection of the milk of human kindness that the group has towards Nigeria.

” You have identified with distraught people in their moment of dire need and you have given unto the Lord because the Bible says he who gives unto the needy lends unto the Lord. God will remember you for good,” Revd Father Umanaholen prayed.

While fielding questions from the polity.net on the fringe of the presentation, Co founder, Better Nigeria- USA, Michigan based Prof. Salewa Olafioye said Better Nigeria- USA is one of the largest , non political, non religious, non tribal, humanitarian organizations based in the US with Headquarters in Detroit.

” The group Better Nigeria- USA consists of several professionals, students with members from the United Kingdom, Canada and USA. The organization started in 2018 and since its inception, it has continued to wax stronger, offering scholarships to indigent Nigerians, providing succor to victims of disasters, assisting schools with quality books and providing free medical services to different communities across Nigeria,” Salewa Olafioye said.

He noted that members of the organization were shocked at the evil attack on a place of worship in Owo on June 5th, noting that the bestial attack must be condemned by all people of good conscience . ” It is sad that not even the holy place of worship is too sacred for terrorists’ attack in Nigeria again.”

Olafioye said the victims of the Owo attack need prayers and support by all well meaning Nigerians and organisations, hence the support presented by Better Nigeria- USA.

On his advice to Government, Olafioye said ” government and security institutions should be on top of their game, proactive and be alive to their responsibility.

” Government should take security challenges in Nigeria seriously and through mass orientation raise the awareness that security issue is everybody’s concern.”
