Rising concerns over kidnapping and abduction in Oyo State have prompted the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to introduce a series of safety measures aimed at protecting worshippers, church workers and religious facilities across the state.
In a communiqué issued in Ibadan on Wednesday, the Oyo State chapter of CAN directed churches to suspend late-night programmes and strengthen physical security around their premises. The directive was jointly signed by the association’s chairman, Reverend Elisha Ogundiya, and secretary, Samuel Owolabi, following what the group described as an increase in security threats affecting communities in the state.
According to the association, churches are being encouraged to adopt preventive measures rather than wait for incidents to occur. CAN advised congregations to engage trained security personnel, install surveillance and other electronic security devices, and improve monitoring of activities within and around church environments.
The group also called on churches without perimeter fencing or controlled access points to prioritise such projects. It further urged religious organisations to properly screen security guards and essential workers, while discouraging the practice of allowing unknown individuals to lodge within church premises.
Beyond places of worship, CAN extended its safety advisory to the wider public. Residents were encouraged to limit unnecessary movement at night, avoid late-hour travel where possible, and comply with the state government’s restriction on commercial motorcycle operations beyond 10:30 p.m. as part of broader efforts to reduce exposure to security risks.
While expressing sympathy for families affected by recent abductions, including victims linked to the May 15 incident in Oriire Local Government Area, the association called on security agencies and government authorities to intensify rescue efforts. CAN also pledged continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders, saying community vigilance and preventive action remain critical to improving public safety across Oyo State.
