Plateau State authorities have moved to limit possible spread of diphtheria by shutting all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, following suspected cases reported in four local government areas.

The temporary closure, which begins on Monday, September 7, 2026, affects schools that had already resumed academic activities, with the government directing students to remain at home until a new date for reopening is announced.

The state government said the decision was taken as a precautionary step to safeguard pupils, students, teachers and other school workers amid concerns over suspected diphtheria infections recorded in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 5, and signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government directed school owners, administrators and teachers to ensure full compliance with the closure order.

The authorities also appealed to parents and guardians to keep their children and wards at home during the period, while assuring residents that further updates on the situation and the timeline for reopening schools would be communicated.

Diphtheria is a contagious disease that can spread through respiratory droplets, making crowded environments such as schools a major area of concern during suspected outbreaks. The closure, according to officials, is aimed at reducing possible exposure while health authorities continue to assess the situation.

As Plateau State responds to the health alert, the government says public safety remains the priority, with residents encouraged to follow official guidance and await further information on the next steps.
