A viral video involving Oyo State governorship aspirant, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, and a student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has sparked public discussion over the boundaries of political interactions and the responsibility of digital audiences in interpreting such moments.

The incident occurred after students from the Department of Banking and Finance of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, visited Alli at his campaign office in Mokola, Ibadan, to invite him to an upcoming programme and conduct an interview. The meeting later attracted attention after a short clip from the visit circulated widely online.

In response to the reactions, Alli’s campaign organisation said the situation resulted from limited seating arrangements at the venue. According to the team, the number of students and guests present exceeded the available chairs, leading Alli to ask one of the students to sit on his lap while the interview continued.

The campaign explained that the interaction was a routine engagement with young people and rejected interpretations suggesting any inappropriate conduct. It said the online reactions were based on a misrepresentation of the circumstances surrounding the visit and urged the public to consider the full context of the encounter.

The development has also renewed conversations about how public figures engage with young supporters, particularly in an era where short video clips can quickly spread without the surrounding details. Media observers and political actors have continued to stress the need for responsible sharing and interpretation of digital content.

The campaign organisation further called on journalists and social media users to avoid sensational reporting, insisting that public discussions about political figures should be guided by facts rather than assumptions. It maintained that Senator Alli’s relationship with young people has been built around mentorship and engagement.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election continue to gain momentum in Oyo State, the controversy highlights the growing importance of transparency, responsible communication, and careful handling of public interactions involving candidates and citizens.
