Osun State is stepping up its preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease, with the state government setting a one-week target to reclaim and prepare a designated emergency isolation facility as part of measures to manage any suspected cases.

The decision followed a meeting of the State Steering Committee on Ebola Virus Disease, where officials and other stakeholders reviewed existing response arrangements and identified gaps requiring urgent attention. A report by the Public Health Operations Centre of the state Ministry of Health outlined the proposed actions.

Beyond the isolation facility, the committee called for stronger coordination across local government areas, with Local Government Rapid Response Teams expected to hold preparedness meetings. The recommendations are intended to improve the speed of local responses if suspected infections are identified.

The state also plans to strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers, beginning with existing master trainers, while arranging dedicated emergency ambulances to transport suspected cases. The committee further recommended holding bays in selected hospitals, replenishment of protective supplies and closer engagement with private healthcare providers to encourage early detection and reporting.

Public education is another priority, with plans to expand radio and television broadcasts and health awareness jingles in Yoruba, Hausa and other local languages. The committee said wider communication would help residents understand the disease and the importance of preventive measures.

The report also stressed the need for emergency funding, timely government approvals and clearly assigned responsibilities to ensure that the recommendations are implemented. It added that the State Steering Committee would need to monitor progress regularly, as the effectiveness of the response would depend on resources and consistent follow-through.

Osun’s preparations come amid a Federal Government directive urging hospitals nationwide to provide isolation beds and strengthen infection prevention and control measures. Federal authorities have also raised concerns that 15 states are yet to update their response plans, placing additional importance on timely action and coordination as Nigeria strengthens its readiness against Ebola.
